Brown Bag #17: Preventing future invasive plant introductions with a State Restricted Plant List

Date: October 4, 2018

Presenters: Christy Martin; PIO & Project Manager for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species (CGAPS); Shahin Ansari; Senior Ecologist for H.T. Harvey and Associates, and Chelsea Arnott; Planner for CGAPS

Summary: What if we knew about Miconia’s invasive impacts elsewhere and had been able to restrict it from importation and sale in Hawaii?  Today, we have the knowledge and tools to better predict a plant’s potential to be invasive before it arrives, but we don’t have the regulatory mechanisms in place to keep them out…until now. In this Brown Bag presentation Shahin Ansari from H.T. Harvey and Associates, Christy Martin and Chelsea Arnott from the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species (CGAPS) discuss the work being done to create a state Restricted Plant List and set of rules that would reduce the risk of future invasive plant introductions for Hawai`i.
