(Hilo) - A 27-year-old man was cited for harvesting 345 undersized ‘opihi from the shoreline at Onekahakaha Beach Park.

(KAILUA-KONA) — The Honokōhau Small Boat Harbor office will be closing immediately due to an employee testing positive for COVID-19.  In an abundance of caution, the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) is having the office sanitized during its closure. The office will reopen on Monday, August 2.

(HONOLULU) – First and foremost, Debbie Herrera the Volunteer and Education Coordinator for Malama na Honu, believes we need to shift the narrative.  “The vast majority of people who come to Laniakea, on O‘ahu’s north shore, pay attention to the signs put up by volunteers from the group. We’re trying to focus on people behaving in pono ways, rather than those very few who refuse, despite dozens of cautionary signs or warnings from volunteers, to give green sea turtles on the beach or in the ocean wide berth,” she said.

(KAILUA-KONA) Temporary closure of the Kailua Pier begins on Wednesday, July 28, daily from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. During the closure, entering the pier will be prohibited. People violating the closure can be cited, fined, or arrested.  

(Kahului, Maui) – A remarkable discovery on Wednesday is providing a morale boast and hope to the dozens of experts working to save kiwikiu from extinction. One bird, released into the Nakula Natural Area Reserve (NAR) on the leeward slopes of Haleakalā, was found alive and well, after being thought dead for 605 days.

 (HONOLULU) – The Hawai‘i Commission on Water Resources Management (CWRM) has approved a permit request from the Hawai‘i Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) to allocate a half million gallons of water per day (.595 mgd) to supply new and existing uses of Hawaiian Home Lands on Moloka‘i. 

(HONOLULU) – Today, the Hawai‘i Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission approved a statement to guide climate action in light of Hawai‘i’s climate emergency declaration (SCR 44), and the American Jobs Plan (AJP), which proposes investing in all forms of infrastructure following the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  

 (Hāʻena State Park, Kaua‘i) – One morning, in late June, a Kaua‘i Police Department officer wrote 25 parking tickets before grabbing another ticket book to write another 25. He was one of two officers ticketing car after car on this day.  Rental cars had lined both sides of Kūhiō Highway adjacent to the Hāʻena Beach County Park and those ticketed get tabbed with $235 fines. Parking enforcement is one of the tools being utilized to achieve the goals of the master plan for neighboring Hāʻena State Park (HSP). More importantly, is a new adaptive management structure which incorporates community involvement as its core. 

(Hilo) – The DLNR Division of State Parks, Wailoa River State Recreation Area will be closed temporarily from Thursday July 22nd through Saturday July 24th as dry wells are being installed to prevent flooding in the parking lot. In addition, a water bottle filing station will be installed and portions of the main entry roadway that have deteriorated over time will be repaved.
