The Hawai‘i Invasive Species Council (HISC) is an integral inter-departmental collaboration involving the Departments of Land & Natural Resources (DLNR), Agriculture (DOA), Health (DOH), Transportation (DOT), Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT), and the University of Hawai‘i (UH). Established in 2003, HISC is dedicated to providing policy-level direction, coordination, and planning among state departments, federal agencies, and both international and local initiatives. Our mission is to control and eradicate harmful invasive species infestations throughout the State and to prevent the introduction of potentially harmful invasive species.
What You Will Do:
As the Research and Projects Coordinator, you will:
- Lead research and projects aimed at enhancing biosecurity and tackling the management of invasive species. This includes coordinating the Port of Entry/Exit Pest Monitoring Program, which is an essential layer of protection at critical points of entry and exit within the state.
- Facilitate partnerships and communications between key stakeholders, aligning efforts across various agencies and organizations.
- Develop and implement monitoring and response strategies to safeguard our islands, working closely with HISC funded research projects to drive innovation and effectiveness in invasive species management.
Who We’re Looking For:
We are seeking individuals with:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Biological or Environmental Science (or a related field) and 4-6 years of relevant experience.
- A deep understanding of ecology and conservation principles.
- Strong communication and organizational skills, capable of bridging the gap between research, policy, and community action.
