HILO -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) announces a make-up date for hunters impacted by the cancellation of the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a Forest Reserve Youth and Disabled and Makai archery hunt for the weekend of August 25-26, 2018 due to Hurricane Lane. The make-up dates are Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30, 2018.
(Honolulu) – All Hawai‘i island and Maui Nui lands under the jurisdiction of the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) are closing at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. The closures are in advance of Hurricane Olivia which is approaching Hawai‘i now. DLNR Chair Suzanne Case explained, “This is standard operating procedure for our publicly accessible lands and is a prudent approach to keep everyone out of harm’s way during these hurricanes and tropical storm events. We know it may be an inconvenience for people, particularly those who have camping permits, but our top priority is keeping everyone…staff and visitors’ safe until the storm has passed.”
(Hilo) – The DLNR Division of State Parks, in consultation with other DLNR divisions and the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency is reopening MacKenzie State Recreation Area (SRA) in Lower Puna on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018. The park had been closed since shortly after the beginning of the East Rift Zone eruption in early May.
(Honolulu) - “Global climate change, especially sea level rise, is perhaps the biggest threat to cultural heritage in Hawai‘i, the Pacific and globally,” said Alan Downer, administrator of DLNR’s State Historic Preservation Division. Historic fishponds, petroglyphs, coastal trails and heiau are among the numerous archaeological sites in Hawai‘i which could be affected in coming years.
HONOLULU -- The Ka ‘Iwa Ridge or “Lanikai Pillbox” trail and pillboxes will be closed all day, on Sunday, September 9 for site clean-up and debris removal. Leftover debris from renovation work recently completed to the World-War II era observation platforms, along with blockades and signage put in place to aid renovation work, will be transported via helicopter lift from the site.
HONOLULU -- Due to tremendous unanticipated and unprecedented demand the DLNR Division of State Parks is not issuing additional 2017-18 vehicle access permits for Ka‘ena Point. The threshold of 10,000 permit decals has been reached for the permit period and all have been assigned. All approved 2017-18 permits will remain valid through December 31, 2018.

KAHULUI - The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) and State Parks Division will close the Kula Forest Reserve, Waipoli access road, Kahikinui Forest Reserve –Papa‘anui Tract, and Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area from Tuesday, September 4, 2018, through Friday, November 2, 2018, to allow for scheduled road repairs, road safety improvements, and fuel mitigation work to be completed.
(Hilo) – In their forest home in the Pu‘u Maka‘ala Natural Area Reserve on Hawai‘i Island, eleven ʻAlalā (native Hawaiian crows) appear to have little difficulty following several days of heavy rains generated by Hurricane Lane. The critically endangered birds, the first to have been successfully released into the wild from conservation breeding facilities last fall, are among the creatures who experienced more than 30 inches of rain during the storm.
