(SAND ISLAND STATE RECREATION AREA, OʻAHU) – Saturday morning, more than four dozen people helped the DLNR Division of State Parks (DSP) conduct an Earth Day cleanup. Volunteers showed up to help enhance areas around the Sand Island State Recreation Area roadway, clean up the shoreline, and learn about the impacts of single-use plastics and marine debris.
(WAIKĪKĪ, O‘AHU) – Mother monk seal, Kaiwi, and her pup spent an hour and forty minutes in the water off Kaimana Beach this morning. This is the third day, since the pup’s birth, the pair have taken to the ocean.

The May 1 reopening will also mark the fourth Hawai‘i state park to require advance reservations for out-of-state visitors.
(HONOLULU) – Next week, the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra will host special performances for students weaving together music, art, science, and storytelling. “Symphony of the Hawai‘i Forests” is a collaboration including the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Hālau ʻŌhiʻa, and others to strengthen our pilina (relationships) with each other, our forests, and the arts.
(HONOLULU) - Typically, a field trip to see how kāhuli (native land snails) are protected from extinction requires access to a secure lab, hours of hiking to mountain-top forests, and plenty of caution to make sure attendees don’t accidentally harm the snails themselves.
(HONOLULU) – Six, pyramid-shaped coral colonies are now growing on the rock a few feet below the surface at Hanauma Bay. The corals were grown at the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources’ (DAR) Coral Restoration Nursery on Sand Island for the very purpose of restoring colonies damaged by natural or human caused events.
(WAIKOLOA, HAWAI‘I) – The DLNR has directed the removal of cat-feeding stations located at a Hawai’i Island shopping center, following complaints that the endangered Hawai‘i state bird, the nēnē (Hawaiian goose), are being negatively impacted by the consumption of cat food and close contact with feral cats.

(HONOLULU) – Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD), a disease caused by fungal pathogens that impacts native ʻōhiʻa trees, was recently detected for the first time in the Waiʻanae mountain range on Oʻahu.
