Brown Bag #21

Title: HDOA Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Response – Five Year Status

Presenter: Kailee Tam Lefebvre, CRB Outreach Specialist, UH CTAHR/HDOA

Date: May 3, 2019

Summary: Recently passing the 5-year anniversary of its detection, the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle Response continues the fight to eradicate this invasive species. Because of the efforts of the CRB Response and its collaborators, the population continues to be primarily contained to the Pearl Harbor area of Oahu and has never been detected on any other Hawaiian island. Overall, trap catches have been increasing steadily over the past 18 months, however; there are signs of progress in some historically infested zones. Green waste management protocols are being implemented not only on military property but also private properties to prevent the spread and growth of the population. Response crews continue to identify and mitigate breeding sites, survey trees for damage and spread awareness in the community. The University of Hawaii also continues to support the efforts to find and eliminate CRB through research. In order to increase the chance of success, there needs to be a comprehensive green waste management plan implemented and enforced, more options for mitigating breeding sites, and increased engagement with state & county agencies.
