Outreach Working Group
The Outreach Working Group is working to implement Strategy 7 from the HISC/CGAPS 2025 Strategy that was released in 2020. This strategy focused on raising and maintaining strong awareness and support for key invasive species issues and expand, diversify and mobilize a network of allies to implement priority actions. The Outreach Working Group is chaired by Christy Martin from UH-PCSU-CGAPS.
Strategy 7: ENGAGED AND SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY – Raise or maintain strong awareness and support for key invasive species issues.
How does this relate to the Hawaiʻi Interagency Biosecurity Plan (HIBP)?
Gaps in action or progress on HIBP actions guided the priorities in this five-year plan. This Strategy 
addresses some critical HIBP tasks for Public Awareness Policy (Pol), Process (Pro), and Technology, Infrastructure, and Funding (Tifs). Highlights include coordinating shared messaging with partners, utilizing existing and new media outlets to disseminate information, providing regular updates to lawmakers on successes. For a more detailed list HIBP linkages for each strategy look to Appendix F of the HISC/CGAPS 2025 Strategy.
Messages
We are working on updating our messaging to reflect and promote the objectives of our new HISC/CGAPS Joint Strategy:
- Protect Hawaii.
- Report a pest to 643-PEST (7378) and 643pest.org.
- Don’t dump aquarium pets or plants.
- Don’t plant a pest.
- Don’t pack a pest.
- Don’t sell or buy a pest.
- Keep pets contained (e.g. cats).
- Buy local.
- Plant native species (promote the value of biodiversity)
