The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 12, to receive public testimony on a proposed extension of Pu`u Maka`ala Natural Area Reserve (NAR) in TMK (3) 2-4-008-009 (POR) . The meeting will take place at The Cooper Center, 19-4030 Wright Road, Volcano, HI 96785. The proposed extension of the Reserve is meant to protect large tracts of koa and ohia forest, where many endangered native Hawaiian animal and plants such as the nene (Nesochen sandwichensis) can survive. Some of these species are extremely rare – such as the Mauna Loa silversword (Argyroxiphium kauense) which is only known from three sites in the wild. The Reserve would also encompass alpine shrublands, bogs, and other unique natural areas. The proposal and a map may be viewed at: https://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dofaw/nars/pm.doc
