About the ʻŌhiʻa Trail Challenge:
In celebration of Native Hawaiian Plant Month (April), Lā Honua/Earth Day (April 22nd), and ʻŌhiʻa Lehua Day (April 25th), the BioCultural Blitz Committee will once again be hosting the ʻŌhiʻa Trail Challenge as part of the Puʻuwaʻawaʻa Biocultural Blitz program. Pilina ʻĀina created this self-guided scavenger hunt along the ʻŌhiʻa Trail at the Puʻuwaʻawaʻa Forest Reserve, which encourages participants to establish and deepen their relationship with the ʻāina of Puʻuwaʻawaʻa and the surrounding native ecosystem. This activity is geared towards 4th graders, but is open to keiki and ʻohana of all ages. The ʻŌhiʻa Trail Challenge started on Friday, April 11th, 2025 and will run through Sunday, May 11th, 2025.
The challenge is about 2 miles round-trip and features signs with QR codes that link to information about Puʻuwaʻawaʻa, wahi pana, ‘ōhi’a, and native and non-native plant species.
