World Migratory Bird Day

May 9, 2026
Kōlea- Alex Wang

World Migratory Bird Day highlights the need to conserve migratory birds and their habitats. Hawaiʻi has a number of migratory birds that spend part of their time living amongst us and part of their time in other locales. Perhaps our most famous migratory bird is the kōlea (Pacific golden plover), which winters in Hawaiʻi and summers in Alaska and siberia. Other migratory birds in Hawaiʻi include the ʻakekeke, koloa mapu, koloha moha, lesser scaup, hunakai, ʻūlili, American wigeon, and kioea.

You can find species profiles, including birdsong, for these species in the migratory bird section of our Birds of Hawaiʻi page.

You can learn about bird habitats, including our offshore islets, on our Wildlife Sanctuaries page.
