‘Ūlei is a common sprawling shrub related to the Rose family. This plant has many uses for Hawaiians. The fruits made a lavender to purple dye for kapa. In addition, the hard, springy wood was used for various crafts such as fishing spears, ‘ō‘ō (digging sticks), and fish net hoops. The flowers can also be used for lei making.
