International Mountain Day
December 11, 2026

International Mountain Day raises awareness of the importance of mountains to people and the planet. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003.
In Hawaiʻi, our mauka areas are home to some of our most intact native forests and the highest concentration of our native plants, snails, and forest birds. The fresh water we rely on is gathered by our mauka forests and deposited into our groundwater and streams. You can learn more about our mauka resources on our Education Pages, through species profiles, educational videos, virtual field trips, or pages about the lands that we manage.
