Species Information
‘Ūlei is a small shrub with bright green leaves and clusters of white flowers that produce red or orange fruits, traditionally used for lei-making and as food. Its wood was used for small tools, and it supports native wildlife.
It grows in full sun to partial shade with low to moderate water, thriving in coastal and dry forest habitats. ‘Ulei is excellent for restoration, ornamental landscaping, and wildlife-friendly planting, attracting birds and insects.
Distribution
Indigenous and found on all main Hawaiian Islands except Niʻihau and Kahoʻolawe (UH)
Habitat
Coastal dry forests, lava flows, rocky slopes, and open areas
