Big Tree: ‘Iliahi
Common Name: Sandalwood
Scientific Name: Santalum paniculatum
Range/ Habitat: ‘Iliahi can be found at elevations between 1500- 8400 ft. in environments ranging from
dry forest areas on lava substrates to humid forests.
Threats: Existing ‘Iliahi populations have been devastated by 200 years of over harvesting. Today, ‘Iliahi is
used in woodworking with controversial logging being done with this species.
About this Species: ‘Iliahi had numerous uses within Hawaiian culture. Besides being used to create leis, the
leaves and wood from this species were used in medicines and musical instruments.
