- 07/12/23 – ONLY FIVE ‘AKIKIKI LEFT IN THE MOUNTAINS OF KAUA‘I AND THEIR CHANCES OF SURVIVAL ARE SLIM(LĪHUʻE, KAUA‘I) – Only five of the native Hawaiian honeycreeper species, ‘akikiki, are left in the wild and chances of saving them are growing increasingly dire by the day. This frightening revelation was shared by Justin Hite of the Kaua‘i Forest Bird Recovery Project (KFBRP) during a community open house Tuesday evening.

Snap, crackle, pop. If you listen to radio and television announcements, we’re all being asked to conserve water. The link between drought conditions and wildfire in Hawai‘i is already in full play and conditions this summer are expected to worsen.
- 4/26/24 – STATE LAND BOARD TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION CULTURAL RESOURCE DAMAGE AND PUBLIC IMPACTS IN $1.8 MILLION FINE FOR BOAT GROUNDING(HONOLULU) – “A slap on the wrist in this situation, would be a slap in the face of this community,” exclaimed John Carty of the Save Honolua Coalition. This, after the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) greatly increased a fine against the owners and operator of the yacht Nakoa. The luxury yacht grounded on a reef approximately 600 yards north of the Honolua-Mokulē‘ia Bay Marine Life Conservation District in February 2023.

- 09/30/19-KIWIKIU TRANSLOCATION HOLDS PROMISE FOR ONE OF THE WORLD’S RAREST BIRDSHaleakalā, Maui; September 30, 2019) In a bold action aimed at saving the endangered Kiwikiu (Maui Parrotbill, or Pseudonestor xanthophrys), in October four conservation partners will begin translocating both captive-bred and wild birds to a restored forest with the goal of creating a second, “insurance” population for this species. The Kiwikiu has declined by over 50 percent in recent years, and fewer than 312 birds remain in the wild.
